CALANGUTE: Hosts Candolim Sports Club overcame Vagator Parish Youth Sports Club 2-0 to move into the quarter-finals of Candolim Village Panchayat Cup football tournament at Dr Gustavo Monteiro ground, Candolim, Friday.
Candolim began on a promising note and forged ahead in the sixth minute when Gaurish Mandrekar’s adroit placement beat rival goalkeeper Samit Gadekar off a Paul Cardozo pass.
Stung by the reverse, Vagator exerted pressure on Candolim defence and almost leveled the score in the 10th minute but a Julius D’Souza try hit the crossbar and went out of play. Kliebber D’Souza headed home a Lester D’Mello corner in the 15th minute to give his team a comfortable 2-0 lead.
Trailing by two goals, Vagator went all-out and almost succeeded in reducing the margin but a Saprem Diukar try was fisted away for an abortive corner by Candolim goalkeeper Marshal Simoes.
Changing over, Vagator created a couple of scoring opportunities but the goals were hard to come. A couple of tries by Domnic and Ramdas hit the crossbar and went out.
