MARGAO: Chinchinim Veterans blanked United Club of Benaulim 2 -0 to enter the semi-final of the 15th VM Salgaocar memorial Veterans Football tournament organised by Prime Sports Club, at St John the Baptist ground, Dando-Benaulim, on Saturday.
Benaulim despite their dominance were wasteful in the first session with striker Pele Fernandes fumbling at crucial time. Midfielder Alfred Fernandes provided passes upfront with Mathew Crasto also combining effectively in the midfield but the goal eluded them.
Chinchinim were a transformed side after resumption and striker Ivan Fernandes put his team ahead following a right wing cross by Peter Fernandes.
Benaulim could have equalised but Chinchinim goalkeeper Viswald D’Souza saved a short by Romeo Fernandes.
Chinchinim put the issue beyond doubt five minutes before the final whistle when striker Ivan Fernandes recorded his brace by tapping in a rebound off a fierce strike of Claude Pacheco.
Earlier chief guest Colva Police Inspector Braz T Menezes was introduced to the teams by the organising chairman, Trevor Fernandes and Remedios Ferrao.
