NAVELIM: Churchill Brothers Sports Club registered a fluent 3-0 win over Bardez Football Club in the Goa Football Association Goa Professional League match played at Rosary ground, Navelim, on Thursday.
Sevelon Cardozo, Anthony Wolfe and Uttam Rai were the scorers for the Red Machines. The win took the Red Machines to 36 points from 16 games and took them ahead of Salgaocar to fourth position, while Bardez FC remained on six points from 21 games.
Bardez FC started the match keeping more of ball possession and gave little room for their opponents to break into the game. Red Machines allowed their opponents to keep the ball as they didn’t press much. Finally the Varca-based team broke the deadlock in the 44th minute when Sevelon tried from a distance only to see his shot crash into the net, 1-0. Churchill Brothers SC, who led 1-0 at the breather, came with renewed ideas in the second session. They were using more of their wings to their game plan which made it difficult for Bardez SC to contain them. The I-League side looked much more sharper in the second session and soon, deservingly, doubled the tally in the 48th minute when Sevelon played a defence splitting pass to Anthony Wolfe, who was lurking in the box, and the striker beautifully controlled the ball before slamming past the rival custodian, 2-0.
Once up by two goals, Churchill Brothers increased the tempo and went all out, but their poor striking pair missed couple of easy chances that would have sealed the game.
However, after much pressing, Uttam Rai scored the third goal in the 65th minute through a solo effort. The former Dempo SC player ran down from the centre dribbling past couple of Bardez players before turning the ball into the net to make it 3-0.
Churchill Brothers’ Jovel Martins and Gilbert Oliveira went into the referee’s book for their reckless tackles.
