PANJIM: It’s been two months since Fernando Varela arrived at the club and the Spaniard knows what football means to Churchill Brothers FC Goa who begin their I-League campaign on Sunday against Indian Arrows at Kalyani Stadium, Kolkata on Sunday.
This season, the club were quite busy throughout the transfer market making some serious signing which includes Clayvin Zuniga, Luka Majcen, Bazie Armand and more. Infact the club has offloaded their entire foreign players of last season and signed all new faces this time around.
The indication is clear from the club. The i-League title is what they are eyeing this season and the coach is aware there cannot be any slipups from the first game itself.
“The idea is to implement a game idea that identifies the team and our fans, to give everything to win the league and to show that we can go game by game,” stated a much confident coach Fernando Varela ahead of the game.
Churchill Brothers are known for their attacking flair and the coach has worked on this aspect of the game to make it even more stronger. But Varela, stressed of creating a right balance in the team to have even better impact in the league and said, “Besides scoring you have to know how to defend, being balanced will give you more options to win, not only you have to think about scoring, but also being strong when defending”
“Creating a balanced team in all its lines is the fundamental thing, knowing how to interpret each game and create options to the offensive line to score will be our main objective,” Varela expressed and added, “All players must know what we play, what is the idea of the team and try to realize the plan for each game, we must demonstrate in each game that we are ready to win,”
The club has signed some talented local talent too. Kingsley Fernandes, Keenan Almeida, Joseph Clemente, Nora Fernandes and more and the coach seemed to be happy with the players.
“The local players have demonstrated that they are at an optimal level and that they have a great potential to be in the league and the Super League, with some players we will be cautious so that their progression is consolidated. We should not force to anything that breaks the chain of progression. Each player is different and we must know how to identify what he needs to grow and thus empower the team,” he explained.
Varela stressed on importance of having a positive start and said, “It’s important to start well because it gives us confidence right at the start and helps us prepare for the second game. But we have to focus against Indian Arrows and be wary because they are young players who are always up for a fight.”
The match will be broadcasted on 1sports and live-streamed on the 1Sports Facebook page.
