CUNCOLIM: Cuncolim Union smothered St Sebastain Union Club, Benaulim 2-0 to enter the quarter-finals of South Goa Mc Dowell’s No 1 Yarri Premiere Cup inter-village football tournament, at Government Village School playground, Cuncolim on Saturday.
Cuncolim Union led 1-0 at the break. The highlight of the match was a brilliant brace by Veteran striker Rosario Mithun Carvalho.
It was Cuncolim Union who shot into the lead in the 19th minute when Veteran defender Krishna Shirodkar well executed free kick was beautifully headed home by Rosario Carvalho in style giving no chance to the Benaulim goalkeeepr Sugatiesh Mandrekar.
Stung by that setback, St Sebastian Union Club raised visions of breaking down the Cuncolim defence. In fact they came close to scoring when Leslie Fernandes was thwarted by rival defender from scoring with a neat tackle.
At the other hand, Cuncolim Union had some scoring chances but their forwards Rosario Carvalho and Nielsh Velip wasted their chances.
St Sebastian Union’s Faisal Bepari had a glorious chance to get a footing into the match but failed to get past the rival defender Krishna Shirodkar.
Cuncolim Union had a golden chance to increase the tally but striker Rosario Carvalho failed to beat the rival goalkeeper in a one on one situation.
Rosario Carvalho later unleashed a snap shot which deflected from rival defender Velson Afonso’s leg and sailed into the nets in the 61st minute.
In another match, Saligao Sporting Club prevailed over host Anjuna Gymkhana 3-2 via tiebreaker to storm into the quarter-finals of, at Anjuna ground.
