VARCA: Curtorim Gymkhana defeated Cuncolim Union 5-4 via tie-breaker to clinch the Varca Panchayat Cup, organised by Varca Panchayat and played at Varca ground, on Sunday.
Cuncolim Union enjoyed better ball possession in the opening minutes of the game. Rosario Carvalho of Cuncolim took control of ball from Frazier Fernandes in the third minute and shot from close range, but his effort missed the target by whiskers.
Minutes later Wellington D’Sousa of Cuncolim took control of the ball from Beston Colaco and shot but missed the target before Frazier missed another opportunity to give his side a deserved lead.
At the other end, Curtorim had a golden opportunity to score but Savio Fernandes saw his header saved by the rival keeper.
In the 13th minute, Frazier Fernandes netted the first goal for Cuncolim with a placement shot off a long ball of Krishna Shirodkar.
Floyd Barretto of Curtorim shot from close range but the rival keeper saved it brilliantly. Alister Silvera netted the equaliser Curtorim off Savior Fernandes connect in the 47th minute.
The match was tied 1-1 at the end of regulation time. In the tie-breaker, Curtorim Gymkhana netted through Savio Fernandes, Floyd Barretto, Jameson Noronha and Elson Cardozo and for Cuncolim Union Krishna Shirodkar, Frazier Fernandes and Edney Fernandes.
The winners collected Rs 60,000 and runners up pocketed Rs 40,000.
Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao was the chief guest and gave away the prizes to winners and runners up in the presence of Joaquim Alemao Ex-Minister, and other dignitaries.
