BETALBATIM: Curtorim Gymkhana defeated UC Nerul 6-4 via tie-breaker to move into the quarter-finals of the Late Joao Francisco Pacheco Memorial football tournament organised by Betalbatim Sports Club, at Betalbatim Sports Complex, on Tuesday.
Joshley Gomes of Curtorim Gymkhana with a grounded shot should have had the ball at the back of UC Nerul net but Paul Cardoza cleared the ball to safety in the 2nd minute.
Curtorim Gymkhana team mustered two chances in the 4th and 5th minute through Elson Cardoza and Savio Fernandes, but missed to shoot on target.
Savio Fernandes floated a long ball to Elson in the 6th minute and Elson with just a left foot tap on the ball scored the opener for Curtorim.
UC Nerul lacked sharpness, as Suraj Kautankar failed to connect inside Curtorim box in the 8th minute of Paul’s diagonal pass.
Anson D’Souza of UC Nerul came up with the ball in the 15th minute but Manuel Castana of Curtorim foiled his move.
Change of ends saw UC Nerul try their level best to equalize as substitute Daphen Rodrigues in the forefront during the 43rd minute changed the story of the match as he connected to a well measured pass however, shot wide.
Again Canute D’Souza of Nerul, supplied a ball to Suraj Kauntankar, at once who delivered it to Sigmund Silveira to shoot from close range, Sigmund made no mistake but to get the equalizer in the 60th minute.
In the resultant tie-breaker Caitan Viegas, Savio Fernandes, Nelson Fernandes, Clive Fernandes and Joshlin D’Costa netted for Curtorim Gymkhana while Suraj Kautankar, Paul Cardoza and Terence D’Mello scored for UC Nerul.
