MARGAO: Curtorim Veterans Gold rallied to beat Curtorim Veterans Old 3-1 to win the annual exhibition football match organized by Curtorim Veterans Club at Curtorim ground, Tuesday. Curtorim Veterans led 2-1 at half time.
Playing out several yesteryears players, Curtorim Veterans Gold would have not settled for anything less than a win and the players responded well with Salazar Cardozo, Domnic Fernandes and Babinio Mascrenhas netting for the winners.
Curtorim Veterans Old took the lead early on when Andrew Baretto bulged the net off a pass from Peter D’Silva.
Stung the early setback, Curtorim Golds regrouped quickly and took the fight to the rival camp and their efforts materialized midway in the opening session when Salazar Cardozo punished the rival goalkeeper with a deft placement to put his team on equal terms.
Spurred by the equalizer, Curtorim Golds created many forays into the rival territory and kept the rival defence on the backfoot for a major part of the game. Domnic Fernanndes made it 2-1 when he unleashed a snap shot which crashed into the back of the net. Curtorim Old tried their best to restore parity with their midfielder Alex Dias working over time to provide a stream of passes for his forwards.
Post resumption, Curtorim Gold continued to dictate terms, enjoyed the lion’s share of exchanges and troubled the rival goal umpteen times. Babino Mascarenhas put the issue beyond doubt when he slotted past the rival goalkeeper late in the second half.
Jaozinho Menezes of Curtorim Old and Seby Fernandes of Gold were declared best players.
MLA Reginaldo Lourenco, chief guest and Shallum Sardinha, guest of honour gave away the prizes. Veteran footballers from Curtorim
– Inacio Ceatano Sequiera and Minguel Rebello received cash incentives of Rs 5,000 each.
The prizes were sponsored by Dempo chief coach Armando Colaco. Alex Dias welcomed. Later, he proposed the vote of thanks.
