Don Bosco Oratory, Fatorda scored a 3-2 tie-breaker win over Betalbatim Sporting Club to emerge champions in the finals of 25th Fraxier Trophy football tournament organised by Young Strikers, Benaulim at St John Baptist ground, Dando-Benaulim on Sunday. There was no score at full time.
The teams were struggling in the opening session, unable to show any purpose. As a result, play was restricted to midfield.
As the match progressed the teams tried their level best to break the deadlock with Allwick Fernandes of Betalbatim and Nana Bandekar of Oratory playing a leading role.
Oratory’s Danny Dias came close to scoring but the Betalbatim goalkeeper rose to the occasion.
At the other end, Betalbatim had chances to forge ahead but their forwards seemed lost on entering the danger zone.
Crossing over, Betalbatim and Oratory raise the tempo, but it didn’t help their cause.
With the scoreline barren, the match rolled into the tie-breaker where Don Bosco Oratory troop out worthy winners.
Mahadeo Talwar, Conceicao Soares and Wilson Dias were on target for Oratory while Allison D’Costa and Allwick Fernandes converted for Betalbatim. Oratory goalkeeper Terrence Barbosa who produced two saves in the tie-breaker was named man-of -the final.
Don Bosco Oratory were richer by Rs 25,000 plus trophy while Betalbatim had to settle for Rs 15,000 plus trophy.
Following prizes were also awarded: Best defender Santan Fernandes of Young Strikers, Benaulim. Best midfielder of tournament Allwick Fernandes of Betalbatim. Best forward of tournament Samson Fernandes of Ambelim. Best goalkeeper of tournament Jonathon Faleiro of Navelim Sporting Club. Highest scorer Cliff Baretto of Don Bosco Oratory, Fatorda. First goal of final Mahadeo Talwar of Don Bosco Oratory. Man of finalTerence Barbosa of Oratory. Best forward of final Denzil Rogtao of Betalbatim. Best goalkepeer of final Benny Fernandes of Betalbatim. Best defender Nana Bandekar of Oratory. Best midfielder of final Danny Dias of Oratory.
Advocate Valanka Alemao, social worker, was the chief guest and gave away the prizes. Maria Rebello, Chairperson, South Goa Zilla Panchayat and John Dias were the guests of honour. PWD Minister, Churchill Alemao presided.
Earlier, Jaju Fernandes, chairman, organizing committee, welcomed the guests. Anthony Rodrigues, organizing secretary, compered the function and later proposed the vote of thanks.
In all, 16 teams participated.
