PANJIM: SS Dempo College, Althino Panjim grounded DMC College, Assagao 2-0 to move into the quarter-finals of the ACF Trophy All-Goa Inter-Collegiate Men’s football championship, organized by Herald Group in association with Sygenta India Pvt Ltd, Powered by Goa Football Development Council and principle sponsors Indian Oil Corporation Ltd, at Agassaim ground, on Monday.
Yogesh Murgaonkar and Dario Rodrigues scored for Dempo College. The match started on an attacking note with the teams pressing hard to get the first goal. The first opportunity came for Dempo College when striker Yogesh Murgaonkar sprinted past the DMC college defenders but saw his effort hit the side netting.
In the eighth minute, DMC College were awarded a free-kick in a promising position when Reagan Fernandes of Dempo College handled the ball at the edge of the penalty area.
However, the eventual free-kick by DMC captain Shubham Shetgaonkar lacked the quality to trouble Dempo custodian Sherwin D’Cunha.
Midway into the first half, Dion Fernandes of Dempo College released Valerian Rodrigues on the right flank and the latter fed Gautam Dais, only to shoot wide.
Yogesh Murgaonkar was the culprit for Dempo College who missed as many as three good chances to give his side the lead. DMC almost punished Dempo College for not taking their chances when a defensive lapse led to the ball falling in the path of Nyron, who instead of scoring into an almost empty net passed the ball to Rama Parsekar, only to be flagged off-side.
The second half started with Dempo College doing most of the attacking and DMC relying on counter-attacking to score.
In the 45th minute, Dempo College captain Dario Rodrigues dribbled past a couple of rival defenders and shot goalwards but DMC goalkeeper Dinesh Morajkar made an excellent.
Dempo College finally managed to go take the lead as Dion found Yogesh, who made amends for his previous mistakes and toed the ball into the top corner of the net, much to the joy of the Dempo camp.
Dion was a livewire for Dempo College as he troubled the DMC defenders with his pace and swift crosses. Dempo College soon doubled their advantage. Again it was Dion doing the spadework as he overpowered his marker and crossed the ball to Dario, who controlled the ball well and made it 2-0.
DMC did get a chance late in the match to get a consolation goal when they were awarded a free-kick in a good position. The free-kick which was taken short by the DMC player Rama Parsekar, whose shot lacked the required finish.
Dempo College will now take on the winners of Tuesday’s match between Fr Agnel College, Pilar and Dhempe College, Mira Mar.
