Dempo SC take top position

MAPUSA: Dempo SC registered a well deserved 1-0 win over Sporting Clube de Goa in the CAM Goa Professional League played at Duler stadium here on Wednesday

With the win, Dempo has 12 points from 5 matches while Sporting stays on 6 points from 4 matches.

Both the teams having won their last league matches took the field all focused of returning home with full three points.

However, it was the Golden Eagles who time and again attacked the rival citadel and had four scoring opportunities but their strikers failed to deliver the goods.

In the 14th minute, Dempo’s Beneston Barretto set up U-20 Necio Fernandes just inside the penalty box whose stiff grounder was superbly saved by Sporting’s keeper Sanij Bugde with a full stretched diving save.

Nine minutes later, Beneston latched a rasping strike from just outside the penalty box which was comfortably collected by the keeper.

As the match progressed, Dempo’s U20 Laximanrao Rane collected a long ball from Ariston Costa dribbled past the onrushing keeper but failed to direct the ball from an acute angle into the goal.

Three minutes, before the breather Dempo’s Beneston was unlucky as his hot blooded efforts was brilliantly saved by Sporting’s keeper.

Flaming Oranje should have broken the deadlock in tenth minute on crossing ends but Dempo keeper Antonio Da Silva brought out of the blue back to back saves to deny Sporting’s Chandan Gawas from scoring.

At the other end, Dempo’s Necio sent a through pass to Beneston who darted inside the penalty box but having just Sporting keeper to beat shot skywards.

Dempo’s coach Samir Naik brought striker Jaison Vaz from the bench whose first touch materialised into a goal. Jaison dribbled past two of Sporting players and excellently curled the ball with a left footer into the far corner of the goal to take the lead.

In the last ten minutes of the match, Flaming Oranje almost pinned their opponents inside their own territory.

A well executed free-kick by Nickson Castanha sailed just over the cross bar while Alton Vaz’s header off a corner travelled inches past the goal post

Dempo’s keeper Antonio Da Silva received the man-of-the-match award from Danira Vaz-Sporting Clube de Goa.
