MAPUSA: Dunes Sports Club put up a brave display to hold Goa Police Sports Club to a goalless draw in the inaugural match of the Geno-GFA First Division League played at Poriat ground, Calangute on Thursday.
Sagar Salgaocar- Executive Director of Geno Pharmacetucals kicked off the tournament.
In a midfield dominated match both the team did not have a decent attempt at each other’s goal until the 40th minute.
Goa Police Shelford Fernandes on getting hold of a pass from Aiyan Shaikh nutmegged keeper Aniket but before the ball could enter the net it was cleared on the goal line by defender Jayesh Chopdekar.
Minutes later Gulrez Khan`s rasping right footer was well kept out by a diving Dunes keeper Aniket Gadekar.
Crossing ends, Dunes almost took the lead but Shashank Ashwekar`s well struck free-kick was brilliantly stopped by rival keeper Niklesh Naik.
While at the other end Police`s Siddesh Narvekar had a awful day in front of the goal as he could not find the back of the nets in the 67th and 73rd minute.
Police team should have walked away with full three points with the chances they were creating this time it was Niraj D`Mello who after doing all the hard work, shot tamely into the keeper’s hands.
In the closing minutes of the match Police keeper Niklesh brought off two saves to deny Shashank Ashwekar from scoring the winning goal.
Shashank was rightly awarded the man of the match trophy by Sunil Ajgaonkar General Manager of Geno Pharmaceuticals.
