CALANGUTE: The legends of yesteryears were felicitated by the Legends of the Beautiful Game of Football, Calangute at Saunta Vaddo, Calangute, Monday.
The legends of football including Fortunato Athanasius Franco, Caetano Catao Fernandes, Avinder Singh, Leopold Fernandes, Shubash P Sinari, Socrates Carvalho, Eustaquio Pereira, Ernest Braganza, Maurice Pinto, Ireneu Joao Gomes (Pandu), Maria Rebello and Anton Lourdes (Sarto) Gomes were felicitated by MLA Michael Lobo and were presented mementos in the presence of Domnic D’Souza, Fr Francisco Miranda, Arjuna Awardee Brahmanand Sankwalkar and other dignitaries.
Speaking at the function, Michael Lobo said: “Grounds are needed in every village of Goa for betterment and growth of sports. The government has been spending on infrastructure for Lusofonia Games which will come handy in the years to come for promotion of sports in Goa. I, however, feel that there is some sort of injustice meted out to individuals who love the game of football (referring to Elvis Gomes’ abrupt transfer) which should not have happened under any pretext but they should in fact be encouraged to give in their best for the love of the game”.
Fr Francisco Miranda and Cyriaco Dias also spoke.
The Legends of the Beautiful Game of Football also felicitated five budding stars of Calangute — Ciana Lobo, Selwyn D’Souza, Lionel D’Souza, Anand Kerkar and Runal Shirodker for their valuable contribution to the game. Michael Lobo gave them a cash incentive of Rs 10,000 each in his individual capacity.
