Friends Sporting Club triumph

Hosts Friends Sporting Club, Carambolim defeated Bela-Vista SC, Corlim 2-0 in the finals of Friends Sporting League Cup 2010 Soccer organised by Friends Sporting Club, Carambolim at Carambolim panchayat ground, Carambolim. Friends led 2-0 at half-time.
The rain-marred match, was devoid of good soccer. Benzy Gonsalves, Sahil Balpravesh and Nithesh Mistry excelled for Friends. Derryl D’Souza, Gaurish Vaigankar and Clyde Dias were excellent in midfield and Frankie Mascarenhas was dangerous in attack. Albino Sequeira, Savio Fernandes and Joseph Rodrigues were outstanding in defence for Bela-Vista with Rahul, Bela-Vista keeper bringing some superb saves.
Friends Sporting went 1-0 up midway in the first half when Friends captain Derryl D’souza scored off a solo run giving no chance to the rival keeper. Just a minute before half time Frankie Mascarenhas made it 2-0 when he scored off a defence splitting pass by Clyde Dias.
In the second session, the teams played a defence oriented game where Friends held the upper hand and came nearing scoring on a couple of occasions but failed.
In the match for third place, Sunshine SC, Carambolim defeated Small Boys Club, Carambolim 2-1. Bhagira put Small Boys ahead while Narayan equalised for Sunshine. At half time the score was 1-1.
Diniz D’Costa scored the match winner in the closing stages to give Sunshine the bronze medal.
Chief guest sister Guilhermina Monteiro, Headmistress of Jesus and Mary Sarvajanik High School, Carambolim gave away the prizes alongwith the guest of honour Franky Fernandes, social worker of Corlim.
Following prizes were awarded: Bronze – Sunshine SC. Silver – Bela-Vista SC. Gold – Friends Sporting Club.
Following individual prizes were awarded: Best goalkeeper of the tournament – Agnelo Lobo of Friends SC. Best defender of tournament – Sahil Balpravesh of Friends SC. Best young player of the tournament – Suraj of Sunshine SC. Best forward of the tournament – Sabir of Bela Vista SC. Best veterans player of the tournament – Diniz D’Costa of Sunshine SC. Best midfielder of the tournament – Derryl D’Souza of Friends SC.
Highest scorer of the tournament – Frankie Mascarenhas of Friends SC with Six goals.
The winners were awarded a Rs. 6,666 plus the trophy while the runners-up had to be content with Rs. 3,333
