Fighting for a place in the line-up for the ‘Maha Derby’ is Goa’s talented winger Gabriel Fernandes, who donned the colours of FC Goa in the inaugural edition.
“It has been great so far. Getting an opportunity to train and play with the likes of Nicolas Anelka and Sunil Chettri has been a great learning opportunity for me. Our pre-season in Dubai went well and I’m looking forward to the start of the ISL,” stated Gabriel.
The 27-year-old mesmerized the fans last time with his dribbling ability and looks to continue showcasing his abundant talent. Gabriel is no stranger in the City of Dreams, having played in past for Mumbai FC in the I-League where he shot to fame.
“Mumbai has always had a passionate set of football fans, whether it is for the I-League or the ISL. The fans are very excited and I’m hoping to repay their affection with some good performances for the club,” added the Sesa FA graduate.
Guided by marquee player-cum-manager Nicolas Anelka, Gabriel feels blessed to work under the Frenchman who is also his role model.
“As a footballer, I want to play well wherever I go. We’re hoping to get some good results and want to win the title this year. Every Indian player dreams of playing for the national side and it’s the same for me. My goal is to play well whenever I get the chance, so I can represent India,” replied Gabriel when asked about his future plans.
The lad from Batim village will however miss playing for The Gaurs (FC Goa) but will surely expect a showdown with former teammates when they meet on October 25 in Mumbai.
“I will miss playing in front of my home fans but this is football and I’m used to it. Also, the Mumbai fans are very passionate and make me feel very welcome. I’m lucky to play for Mumbai City FC and am hoping to perform well here,” concluded Gabriel.
