MAPUSA: Goa Velha Sports Club scored a narrow solitary goal win over Vagator Parish Youth Sports Club in the GFA First Division League match played at Duler Stadium, here on Sunday.
The match hardly rose to great heights in the first session with moves few and far between.
In the 14th minute, Nitesh Salgaonkar made a run into the rival danger zone and unleashed a shot which was collected by Goa Velha keeper Agnelo Silva.
At the other end Vagator keeper Dinesh Moraskar did well to push away Markal Morais powerful 25-yard shot.
Ten minutes into the match Markal Morais once again came attacking when he charged into the Vagator citadel only to be dispossessed by defender Navin Shirodkar before he could aim goalwards.
After a couple of minutes of midfield action Nestor Dias snatched the ball from Vagator defender Paresh Vaigankar and made his way into the 18-yard box but he surprisingly shot the ball wide having only the keeper at his mercy.
In the injury moments of the match Franky Cabral on getting hold of the ball made a swift run into the Vagator camp only to see his powerful right footer being pushed away for a corner by the keeper.
On resumption of play the referee found the Vagator defender guilty of getting his hands to Joseph Rodrigues shot inside the danger zone and pointed towards the dreaded spot. Joseph took the responsibility of taking the penalty and gave his side the precious lead, 1-0.
Four minutes into the match Nyron Dias played a nice one-two with Nitesh Salgaonkar and made their way into the Goa Velha camp but keeper Agnelo Silva came with a timely save.
At the other end Nestor Dias on getting hold of a loose ball made a solo run into the Vagator 18-yard box, however keeper Dinesh Moraskar left his charge and rushed forward to deny Goa Velha from increasing their lead.
Minutes later, Joseph Rodrigues curling free-kick from the edge of the box was swayed away by the diving Vagator keeper Dinesh only to see the ball roll towards Franky Cabral who ballooned over the goal.
In the final ten minutes of the match both the sides had numerous goal scoring chances, however none of them transcribed into goals.
Moments before the fulltime whistle Goa Velha were reduced to 10 men after Nestor Dias was given marching orders by the referee for rough play.
