PANJIM: Government College, Quepem edged past Don Dosco Engineering College, Fatorda 4-3 via the tie-breaker to enter the quarter-finals of AC Fernandes memorial all-Goa inter-collegiate tournament, organized by Herald Group in association with GOA, at Panchayat ground, Nagoa, Verna, Sunday.
In the early stages of the second half, Govt college keeper Jovial Coutinho brought a Don Bosco attacker down at the edge of the box. The resultant free-kick was curled beautifully by Aggio Antao only to be parried away by the Quepem keeper.
In the ensuing penalty shoot-out, the Quepem College kept their cool.
In the second match, Rosary College, Navelim thumped IAM Nuvem 5-1 with a fine brace by Nevil Albuquerque. Jaison Periera, Necil Pinto and Stephen Periera were the other scorers for the winners while Steve Fernandes scored a consolation goal for IAM Nuvem.
Rosary College dominated the entire match. It took some time before the first goal was scored. Minutes before the half hour mark, Austin Fernandes’ corner-kick sailed over the rival defence and found Stephen, who crossed the ball to unmarked Jaison for a finish through a delightful volley, 1-0.
In the second half, Rosary College scored the second goal after defender Nevil Albuquerque headed the ball into the net. Necil made it 3-0 while Nevil secured his brace with a beautiful header with 10 minute to go.
IAM did have a smile on their face when hard-working Steeve, who was the outstading performer for the Nuvem side pulled a goal back. With just two minutes remaining, Stephen scored his first and Rosary’s fifth goal to complete the rout.
