MAPUSA: Holy Cross Sports Club, Arambol continued their reign on top of the GFA’s 2nd Division League Play-off league table with a 2-0 win over Portais Sporting Club, at Duler Stadium, here, on Wednesday.
HC Arambol now stand with four points while Portais are out of the competition having lost two of their play-off matches.
In a one way traffic it was HC Arambol who called the shots, keeping their rivals pinned in their own half for major duration of the match.
Jason Fernandes put the winners ahead in the 24th minute of play when his 25-yard rasping shot crashed into the Portais nylons.
Minutes into the match Arambol almost netted in their second goal, however Portais keeper Swisfron D’Silva came with a good save to block Anand Gad in a one-to-one situation.
Crossing over Swisfron put up a commendable performance under the horizontal bar to deny Sandesh Sawant and Vivek Naik from scoring from close range.
However, in the 85th minute of play the constant probing by Arambol paid them the dividends as Vivek Naik neatly set the ball to overlapping Shashank Asvekar who made no mistake to tap the ball home.
Portais came close to reducing the margin seconds before the final whistle but Elton Godinho saw his strike rebound of the Arambol woodwork.
