NAVELIM: ICSC Paroda defeated Varca SC 1-0 to move into the semi-final of the All-Goa late Jose Bento Furtado Memorial football tournament, on Tuesday.
Paroda’s Sweaton Fernandes’ solo effort was foiled by the Varca SC defence in the 12th minute.
Varca almost scored in the 27th minute when Columbian Noronha’s close range shot was saved on the goal line by the Paroda keeper.
In the second half, the Paroda players embarked on a series of passes which saw the ball find its way into the path of an unmarked Sezvin Fernandes in the box.
Sezvin smashed the ball into the net to make it 1-0.
Paroda kept up their attacking tempo and Raston Costa tried a shot from distance that was saved by Varca keeper Mohammad Shaikh.
Shaikh had to be alert to keep his team in the game when a lightning quick counter attack down the left saw Raston pick out Sweaton in the middle but the attacker’s weak shot was saved by the keeper.
Sweaton could have easily doubled the lead for his team after being one-on-one with the keeper.
This was followed by another swift attack and Sezvin shot wide.
Varca had a glorious opportunity to equalise when Columban Noronha’s free kick from almost 25 yards out hit the post and came back into the box.Yet another goal scoring opportunity was missed by
Varca forward Jhonus D’Costa who was lurking in the box shot over the Paroda cross bar.
