AMBELIM: Joswel Cardozo made a star turn for Our Lady of Rosary High School as they launched their Reliance Foundation Youth Sports football campaign on a winning note at the Ambelim ground on Wednesday.
Player of the match, Joswel’s 36th minute strike was enough to upstage Regina Martyrum High School 1-0 in the Junior Boys qualifier on the inaugural day of the Goa leg.
In another match, Shree Damodar College of Commerce and Economics trounced CES College of Arts and Commerce 4-2 in a College league encounter.
The efforts of CES’ Glen Fernandes, who scored two goals, went in vain as the Damodar boys packed too much power finding their goals through Stephen Satarkar, Abhay Shetty, Ruflon Fernandes, Arif Pathan.
The Goa leg was inaugurated in the presence of FC Goa players Brendan Fernandes and Seriton Fernandes.
Reliance Foundation’s ambitious national football tournament for schools and colleges had kicked-off earlier this month with RFYS’ founder and chairperson Nita Ambani launching it in Kochi.
“Our goal is to revolutionise sport in the country,” Nita declared as she kicked the ball to announce the tournament’s grand opening. “We want to provide our budding stars the right platform to not only showcase their skills but also to improve at every level,” she added.
The tournament in its second year of existence has carved a niche for itself at the junior level and has already become a strong medium to scout talents with eight players from last year already making to India U-23 selection trails for the AFC Qualifiers.
