GOA VELHA: Maina Sports Club beat United Club Nerul 7-6 via the tie-breaker in the 12th London Trophy inter-village tournament organised by Goa Velha Sports Club held at Goa Velha ground, on Saturday.
The Nerul side were the first to look at goal in the 12th minute as Sanket Jotkar received the ball and ran down the right flank as he crossed the ball inside the box which found Dwayne Britto who swiftly headed it into the back of the nets amidst a blank Maina custodian Johnson Bhagat.
As the Maina side were just recovering from the opening goal, Nerul team doubled their lead two minutes later. This time it was Sanket Jotkar who got his name onto the scoresheet as he ran on the right side and shot blank on target to make it 2-0.
The Nerul team completely dominated the first half of the game and added further misery onto the opposition as they netted their third goal in the 21st minute. This time Sanket’s shot on target was deflected off Floyd Barretto which landed into the post as they lead comfortably at half time 3-0.
Moving over, Maina SC came out stronger as Savio Fernandes reduced the margin after heading in a perfect pass from Caitano Viegas in the 45th minute.
At the hour mark, Stanley D’Silva handled the ball inside the danger area which earned the Maina team a penalty and Caitano Viegas made no mistake to convert to make it a tough fight.
And they were successful to make it 3-3 in the 65th minute as Savio Fernandes brilliantly tapped the ball home after the keeper Sidesh Morje failed to collect the ball back in time.
In the tie-breaker, Suray Kauntakar, John Vaz and Russel Fernandes converted for the Nerul team while Savio Fernandes, Clive Colaco, Caitano Viegas and Johnson Bhagot scored for the Maina side as they proved to better from the spot winning 7-6.
