MARGAO, MARCH 25
Margao Sports Club defeated Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim with a solitary goal win in a GFA Second Division play-off, at Tilak ground, on Thursday.
The all-important goal was scored by Nickson Rebello.
Following their opening match win against St Savio Sports Club, Calangute, Margao chalked out a plan to tame the Cavelossim side. Playing an attacking game, they forced Santa Cruz on the back foot and seemed to be in complete control of the proceedings.
Margao came twice in surging ahead but striker Venson Figueiredo’s tries twice hit the crossbar much to the dismay of the Margao supporters.
At the other end, Santa Cruz had moments of glory but their forwards frittered away easy sitters.
The lone goal came in the 34th minute when Nickson Rebello slotted past the rival goalkeeper off a pass from Richard Colaco.
Stung by the early reverse, Santa Cruz tried their best to find the equaliser but failed to get past the Margao defenders.
With this win, Margao collected six points from two matches while Santa Cruz suffered their first loss and have three points from two matches.
