A brace each by Saish Palyekar and Somshekar Karbar ensured Nagoa Sporting overcame Chapora Yuvak Sangh 7-3 in GFA’s Third Division at Chapora ground on Friday. The score was 2-2 at the lemon break.
The turning point happened in the second half after Nagoa forward Pravin Jadhav was brought down by the rival goalkeeper. Pravin was shown the yellow card for taking his protest too far after not getting the penalty he felt he deserved, but this stirred his side into action and they netted five after that with no reply.
The match started with a heavy downpour, but both teams continued to slog it out.
Nagoa’s Saish opened the scoring in the 6th minute. His cross from the right deflected off the head of a rival defender and ended up in the back of the net.
Two minutes later Nagoa found themselves two up after Pravin Jadhav punted in from close.
Chapora did not have to wait long to get back in the match. In the 14th Shrikrishna Bhosle tucked the ball in.
Two minutes before the breather Santosh Varchadkar saw his cross from the right curl in unexpectedly to his delight.
Five minutes after the break Chapora took a surprise lead, with Shrikrishna scoring his second, striking a banana shot from the most difficult of angles.
Having conceded three goals and falling behind, Nagoa replaced their goalkeeper Pritesh Mudkar with reserve custodian Fidelash D’Souza.
In the 59th Sanjay Kandolkar got on the end of a cross delivered in by Ronald Fernandes. This brought Nagoa level.
From this moment on Nagoa took the cue to push forward continuously. Luis D’Souza struck through a packed defence to give Nagoa the lead in the 60th.
Somshekar Karbar netted twice in the 71st and 73rd to put the result beyond doubt.
Saish chipped in with his second to add the final nail in the coffin. By the end Chapora were happy to hear the referee blow the final whistle.
In another match at St Christopher ground, St Christopher hammered Eagle SC 8-2. Vincent Rodrigues and Alex Fenandes each scored a hat-trick and Sebastian Almeida and Anslem D’Souza also scored for St Christopher. Agnelo D’Silva and Gulshan Pednekar netted for Eagle. St Christopher led 5-1 at the interval.
In the opening match at Quitula ground, Sinquerim Sports Club, Mapusa and Augustias played out a 2-2 draw. Sanjay Mayekar opened the scoring in the 7th for Augustias. Malcolm Abreu doubled the lead in the 48th. Sinquerim fought back and their persistence paid off, when Devraj Tari and Dattaraj Tari converted in the 68th and 85th respectively to salvage a point.
