MARGAO: Navelim Sporting Club defeated St Anthony’s Sports Club, Assolda 5-4 via tie-breaker in the final to clinch the 16th Fr Basilio Andrade Memorial Trophy football tournament organized by Associacao Academica De Majorda-Uttorda-Calata, at Musson ground, Majorda on Sunday.
In the first half, both the teams failed to score. They dished out good brand of football skills but the defence guarded the goal area well.
In the 10th minute, Jason Pereira of Navelim Sporting shot was saved by the St Anthony SC goalkeeper. Soon in the 12th minute, St Anthony SC tried to score but Succoro Fernandes shot wide.
Crossing over, Clinton Niasso gave the lead for Navelim SC in the 50th minute off a supply by Sandy Colaco. Within 15 minutes, St Anthony SC equalised with the efforts of Juliano Fernandes off a supply by Kevin Vaz.
At the end of regulation time, the teams were held to a 1-1 draw.
In the resultant tie-breaker, Navelim SC scored through Jason Pereira, Sandy Colaco, Eldrich Coelho and Avlon Gomes while St Anthony SC were on target through Succoro Fernandes, Kevin Vaz and Cruz Gomes.
The winners were awarded Rs 40,000 plus trophy while runners-up had to be content with Rs 30,000 plus trophy. The individual prizes awarded were: Best goalkeeper of the final Clinton Gomes, Best defender of final Alvito Colaco (both Navelim SC), Best half Cruz Gomes, best forward Succoro Fernandes (both St Anthony SC)
Mickky Pacheco, MLA of Nuvem Constituency was the chief guest and gave away the prizes to the winners and runners-up in the presence of Nelly Rodrigues, ZP Member; Dominic Carvalho, deputy sarpanch of Majorda Village Panchayat, other dignitaries and club officials.
Joaquim Godinho was felicitated on the occasion.
Earlier, President Teotonia D’Costa welcomed while Joaquim Godinho and Agnelo Fernandes introduced the players to the guests. William Vaz compered and Francis Fernandes proposed the vote of thanks.
