MARGAO: Navelim Villagers Union came from behind to defeat Uguem’s Rising Sports Club 6- 4 via the tie-breaker to march into the semi-finals of all-Goa St Sebastian Union Club inter-village football tournament organized by St Sebastian Union Club, Benaulim, at St John the Baptist ground, Dando-Benaulim, on Monday. Rising SC were leading 1-0 at the break.
Rising SC began their game attackingly and took the lead in the 20th minute through Joyson Barretto, who punished the rival goalkeeper with a clinical finish.
Stung by the setback, Navelim Villagers Union intensified their attacks in search of equalizer but rival defenders rose to the occasions to thwart rival attacks with neat tackles.
Crossing over, Navelim Villagers Union showed some urgency and they began to trouble the rival defence with sporadic raids. The equalizer came in the 40th minute through striker Allister Gomes.
In the penalty shoot-out, Joseph Dias, Wilton Gomes, Jaison Pereira, Rovel Gomes and Eulon Gomes scored for Navelim Villagers Union while Asyio Godinho, Allister D’Souza and Denzil Jhadav converted for Rising Club.
Navelim Villagers Union will now meet Cuncolim Union in the semi-finals on August 21.
