SAO JOSE DE AREAL: Navelim Veterans got the better of Curtorim Veterans 6-5 via the tie-breaker to move into the semi- finals of the 2nd Assolda Veterans football tournament, played at Padribhat ground, Sao Jose de Areal, on Friday.
Navelim’s Johny D’Cruz created the first chance when he crossed the ball to Frank Fernandes in the box, but latter’s shot was saved by rival keeper in the 7th minute.
Navelim Veterans’ Ajay set up Seby Pereira who was lurking in the rival box and the latter’s effort gave no chance to the diving keeper in the 10th minute.
Navelim’s Frank Fernandes tried a solo long range shot which missed the target by whiskers.
Curtorim equalised in the 15th minute when Roque Carneiro ran down the left flank and played an inch-perfect pass to Mario Pereira, who headed past the rival keeper.
Curtorim could have doubled the lead just before the break but Roque’s goal bound shot was blocked by rival defender.
Crossing ends, Roque missed another opportunity when his shot hit the post and went out of play. At the other end, Caitan Pereira’s header missed the Curtorim nets in the 50th minute.
In the resultant tie-breaker, Navelim Veterans netted through Cajie, Claude, Ajay, Joaquim and Caitan while Mario, Seby, Raju and Chima scored for the losers.
Navelim Veterans will meet Albert Developers Merces Veterans in the semi-final on April 6.
