CALANGUTE: Nerul Sports Club scored a hard fought solitary goal victory over Adarsh Yuvak Sangh in the inaugural match of Candolim Village Panchayat Cup 2013 football tournament organised by Candolim Sports Club at Dr Gustavo Monteiro Stadium, Candolim, Tuesday.
Nerul began on a promising note and forged ahead in the 10th minute through Ritesh Gaonkar whose deft placement beat the rival keepr Soma off a Philip move. Stung by the reverse, Adarsh went all-out in search of the equaliser and came close to drawing level in the 15th minute but a Govind Mahale try went inches over the bar. Atish Gaonkar could have doubled the lead for Nerul but he missed the mark narrowly.
Changing over, Adarsh earned a penalty in the 40th minute following a deliberate handball in the danger zone. Nerul keeper Niklesh however rose to the occasion and blocked Ajay Diwadker’s try. Dyaneshwar effected a goalline save off Mohan Parab in the 50th minute.
Earlier, the tournament was kicked off by sarpanch Sandra Fialho in the presence of deputy sarpanch and president of Candolim Sports Club Lourenco Fernandes and other officials.
