MAPUSA: Nerul SC struggled before squeezing past Vagator Parish by a 9-8 margin via sudden death in the Saligao United Soccer Cup 2016 played at Candolim ground, on Thursday.
Despite holding the upper hand in the entire match proceedings, Vagator Parish failed to beat their rivals in the penalty shootout.
Nerul almost conceded a self goal in the 22nd minute of play when defender Devendra Pednekar’s header to his goalkeeper missed entering the nets by a whisker.
Vagator Parish have themselves to blame for the loss, as they faltered from scoring from open sitters time and again.
In the 38th minute of play, Anson D’Souza rasping right footer banged the Nerul SC upright while four minutes later Nerul SC keeper Sahil Shirodkar brilliantly fisted away Nitesh Salgaonkar’s shot.
As none of the sides could break the deadlock in regular time, the tie-breaker was implemented where Siddharth Shirodkar, Aniket Agarwadekar, Ryan Pereira, Akash Banaulikar, Anson D’Souza, Antonio Kumar, Prashant Naik, Jeniffer Clemente and Samir Shirodkar shot on target for Nerul SC while Vinayak Mulgaonkar, Nitesh Salgaonkar, Dinesh Moraskar, Jesman Carvalho, Akshay Dabholkar, Soma Korgaonkar, Rama Parsenkar and Akxya Vengurlekar scored for Vagator Parish.
