MAPUSA: Nerul Sports Club came with a spirited display to register a solitary goal win over Goa Velha SC to lift the St Anthony’s Cup, organised by St Anthony’s SC, Marna, at St. Anthony’s church ground, Siolim, here, on Saturday.
At a largely attended final, the all important winning goal came in the 18th minute of the first session when Nerul’s Deu Sangelkar dribbled past the Goa Velha defence and sent a perfect cross to Lokesh Talwar who headed the ball into the Goa Velha net.
On crossing over, Goa Velha went all out in search of the equaliser but Nerul’s defence marshalled by Sidhant and Akash failed to bulge under pressure.
In the dying minutes of the match, Nerul keeper Niklesh Naik came with a series of saves to give his team the glittering trophy.
Minister of Ports, RDA, Waste & Management, Michael V Lobo gave away the prizes to the winners and runners-up in the presence of Salu Fernandes, Edger Fernandes, Ex. MLA and former Minister Dayanand. Mandrekar, GFA Sr. Vice President Lavino Rebello, GFA Executive Member Babli Mandrekar, Sarpanch of Siolim-Sodiem Panchayat Nilesh Vaigankar, Member Secretary of GFDC Aleixo Da Costa, panch members and other dignitaries.
