MAPUSA: League toppers Churchill Brothers Sports Club hammered bottom placed Curtorim Gymkhana 4-0 in the eighth round match of the Goa Pro League, at Duler Stadium, here, on Tuesday.
The unbeaten Varca side stand with 18 points while Curtorim Gymkhana are yet to open their account.
Churchill Bros SC went into the breather with a comfortable two goal lead and fired in two more goals on crossing over.
In a one way traffic Churchill Bros SC could have surged ahead in the 10th minute had it not been for Curtorim Gymkhana keeper Muhammad Shaikh, who came with an acrobatic save to deny Nicholas Fernandes.
Two minutes later, The Red Machines shot into the lead through Ashwin Godinho who on collecting a loose ball made a run into the rival citadel and unleashed a stinging strike which had no answer from the rival keeper.
Stung by the goal, Curtorim Gymkhana thereon concentrated on defending their citadel from any further intrusion, rather then going into an attack.
They proved successful in doing so, until a minute before the halftime whistle when Jaison Vales on getting hold of the ball inside the 18-yard box fired it home to take his side two goals up.
On resumption of play Churchill Bros SC continued from where they had started bringing on several invasive forays and had it not been for some fine saves by keeper Muhammad Shaikh the scoreline would have been much embarrassing for Curtorim Gymkhana.
Despite his brilliance performance under the horizontal bar, Churchill Bros SC yet again managed to find the back of the nets in the 66th and 75th minutes through the boots of Nicholas Fernandes.
Churchill Bros SC came close to making it 5-0 in the 81st minute but Olan Chandra managed to thwart Jaison’s attempt at goal.
