NAVELIM: Parish Youth Nuvem defeated Pilerne SC 4-2 via the tie-breaker in the final to clinch the 1st Sancho Memorial Cup organized by Navelim Sporting Club at Rosary ground, Navelim, on Sunday.
In both the sessions, the teams failed to score.
In a well contested match, both the teams started on an attacking note but failed to convert.
Albino Pereira of Parish Youth Nuvem in the 9th minute could have taken the lead but Pilerne SC’s Royston Pereira tackled the move.
Again Parish Youth Nuvem missed an opportunity in the 15th minute as Stanley Colaco shot wide.
Pilerne SC through Royston Pereira set up a ball to Rajat Chopdekar in the 21st minute but the defender of Parish Youth Nuvem Robinson Alvares cleared the ball to safety.
Crossing over, Pilerne SC through Rajat’s header missed the rival nets in the 49th minute off a beautiful cross by Royston.
Parish Youth Nuvem through Albino could have scored the match winner in the 59th minute but his powerful grounder hit the goalpost of Pilerne SC and went out of play.
In the resultant tie-breaker, Parish Youth Nuvem were on target through Stanley, Mefen Coutinho, Godfrey Mascarenhas and Remmy Colaco while Pilerne SC netted with the efforts of Rajat and Royston.
The winners were awarded Rs 40,000 plus trophy and runners-up Rs 30,000 plus trophy.
The individual prizes awarded were: Best defender of the final Robinson Alvares (PY Nuvem), Best goalkeeper of final Francisco Fernandes (PY Nuvem), Best half of the final Royston Pereira (Pilerne SC), First scorer of final Godfrey Mascarenhas (PY Nuvem), Man-of-the-Match Albino Pereira (PY Nuvem), Best forward of final Rajat Chopdekar (Pilerne SC), Best discipline team CDJ Raibandar.
Chief guest Minister for Fisheries Avertano Furtado gave away the prizes to the winners and runners-up in the presence of guest of honour Fr Jose Roque Gonsalves, parish priest of Our Lady of Rosary Church, Navelim; Zilla Parishad member Edwin Cardozo, President of Goa Referee Association Constanpaul Rodrigues, George Barretto, Sarpanch of Navelim Village Panchayat Frank Fernandes, MMC Councillor Jaffar Mohamed, other dignitaries and club officials.
Earlier, President Jose Coelho welcomed while Albert Mascarenhas and Lorry Dias introduced the players to the guests.
Alvito Menezes compered and Aluzio Fernandes proposed the vote of thanks.
