MARGAO: Hosts Parish Youth, Nuvem shunted out Verna Sports Club 6-5 via the tie-breaker to annex the 1st all-Goa South Goa Zilla Panchayat Cup inter-village football tournament, organized by Parish Youth, Nuvem at church ground, Nuvem, on Sunday. The teams were tied 1-1at normal period.
Verna Started the game on aggressive note with their midfielders and forwards working in tandem to put the rival defence under tremendous pressure.
Persistent forays paid of dividends when Basil Rego’s shot crashed into the net keeping rival goalkeeper dazed.
Backed by home crowd, Parish Youth fought gallantly and their forwards swarmed into the rival territory with sporadic raids and Presley Colaco restored parity midway in the opening sessions.
Crossing over, the teams exhibited better performance and went all out in search of match-winner but failed.
In the ensuing penalty shoot-out, John Dias, Schubert Colaco, Remmy Colaco, Stanley Colaco and Presley Colaco were on target for Parish Youth while Basil Rego, Necidade Moniz, Santan Rego and Savio Fernandes converted for Verna Sports Club.
Parish Youth, Nuvem were richer by Rs 40,000 and a glittering trophy while Verna Sports Club had to settle for Rs 30,000 a trophy.
The following individual prizes were awarded to Best midfielder of the final Basilio Rego of Verna, Best goalkeeper of the final Francis Fernandes of Parish Youth and Best player of the final Presley Colaco of Parish Youth.
Venencio Furtado, South Goa Collector was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of Gurudas Pilarmekar, Director of Panchayats; Fr Victor Rodrigues, parish priest of Nuvem church; Nuvem Sarpanch Rueben D’Costa; Nelly Rodrigues, chairperson of South Goa Goa Zilla Panchayat and Wilfred D’Sa, vice chairperson South Goa Zilla Panchayat.
Wilfred D’Sa (Babashan) was conferred Nuvemkar of the Year 2014 at the hands of Collector Furtado.
Earlier, Nelly Rodrigues welcomed. Cyril Andrade, president of Parish Youth Nuvem proposed the vote of thanks.
