BAINA: Pilerne SC outplayed Rossman Cruz, Nagoa 3-1 in the inaugural match to book the quarters-finals berth in the 43rd Bandodkar memorial inter-village football tournament organized by Baina Sports Club, at the MPT ground, Baina-Vasco, on Friday.
At half time, Pilerne SC were leading 2-1.
Rossman Cruz made the first attempt at the goal through Savio Fernandes in the very second minute off a connect by Stephen Satarkar but defender Ganesh Shirodkar of Pilerne SC foiled the move. If Canute D’Souza of Pilerne SC was not there on time near goalline striker Stephen Satarkar of Rossman Cruz would have found the ball at the back of the net in the fourth minute.
Rossman Cruz goalkeeper Franky Abranches saved a powerful grounder of Pilerne SC’s Prashant in the 9th minute. Pilerne SC went into the lead in the 16th minute with Paul Cardozo making a fine placement off a pass by Prashant.
Bapu Pednekar of Pilerne SC doubled the lead with a rasping shot off a Anson D’Souza’s connect.
In the extra time of the first half, Benston Barretto of Rossman Cruz reduced the margin off an excellent pass by Savio Fernandes.
Post resumption, Paul scored his brace in the 63rd minute after receiving a pass from Ganesh Shirodkar.
Later, Rossman Cruz dominated the game but their strikers failed to score. Savio and Ajay Satarkar made moves upfront but the Pilerne SC defence lines guarded their fort.
Earlier, Andrew Rodrigues, treasurer and one of the oldest member of Baina Sports Club declared the tournament open in the presence chief guest Sashikant Parab, Sunil Loran, MMC vice-chairperson, Leo Rodrigues, councillor of MMC and Rajan Bhosle, president of Baina SC.
