MARGAO: Maina Sports Club scored a solitary goal victory over Cuncolim Union to move into the quarter-finals of the 26th Curtorim Panchayat Cup football tournament organized by Curtorim Gymkhana, at Curtorim Church ground, on Saturday.
In the first half, Maina dominated the proceedings. Jameson Noronha in the 16th minute dogged the defenders to move ahead with the ball and almost scored but his shot hit the cross piece and rebound back into play. Placindinho Fernandes assisted. Cuncolim Union also made an attempt to score through Treyson D’Costa but his ground shot was saved by the rival goalkeeper in the 23rd minute off a connect from Clifton Dias.
Later, Maina scored the match winner in the 29th minute through veteran Rocky Carneiro off a direct free-kick which sailed into the nylon of Cuncolim Union.
Post resumption, Cuncolim Union tried to equalise and also score the match winner but in vain.
