PANJIM: Defending champions Rosary College of Commerce and Arts, Navelim, pipped St Xavier’s College, Mapusa, 1-0 to win the Goa University inter-collegiate women football championship, played at University ground, Taleigao Plateau, on Monday.
Winning this year also Rosary College registered a hat-trick of wins at Goa University’s inter-collegiate football women championships, they have been champions for years 2019-20, 2022-23, and 2023-24.
Rosary College started with attacking intent and dominated play in the first half, having more ball position. The lone goal was scored in the 7th minute of the match by Rhea Pires.
Crossing over, Rosary College, with a strong attacking approach and sensible play, had chances to score but most of the shots were off-target. Also, St Xavier’s College showed some offensive play but was kept at bay by the strong defence of Rosary College to crown themselves the champions.
The best player of the championship was awarded to Rhea Pires of Rosary College of Commerce and Arts, Navelim.
Chief guest Dr Caitano Fernandes, president, Goa Football Association and guest of honour Milton Fernanders, former assistant Director of Physical Education and Sports, Goa University; Collin Vaz, former member of Goa Football Development Council; Dr Francis Lobo, college director of Physical Education and Sports, Rosary College, along with Balachandra Jadar, assistant director of Physical Education and Sports, Goa University, graced the valedictory function and presented medals and trophies to the finalist.
