PANJIM: Pilerne Sports Club will take on Rossman Cruz Nagoa Sports Club, Verna in the inaugural match of the 43rd Bandodkar Memorial Inter Village Football Tournament 2016 organized by Baina Sports Club, on June 10, at MPT ground, Vasco, at 4 p.m.
Only 16 teams will participate, seven each from North and South and one each from Ilhas and Mormugao. The winners will receive Rs 55,000 while the runners-up will take home Rs.45,000. Semi-final losers will take home Rs 15,000 each.
Individual cash prizes of Rs 5,000 each for better performance such as upcoming player of the tournament, highest scoring team, highest scoring player, best goalkeeper and best discipline team. Also man-of-the-match award for each match kit bag consisting of pair of boots, pair of socks, pair of singuard and jersey/short.
This competition started since 1973, after the death of Late Chief Minister D.B. Bandodkar , who was a great sports lover, the same was held without any break.
This tournament is one of the oldest tournaments of Goa, drawing a large number of spectators and has been greatly instrumental in popularizing football in Goa and bringing professionalism in its conduct, it is such efforts that have made football the most popular game of Goa at this juncture.
“It also gives us great sense of satiation that we have in our own little way given opportunities to the young football players to show case their talent and promote talent where due. This tournament is also a nursery for young and upcoming players. Some played in this tournament have done yeomen service to local and national level clubs,” the club stated.
