MAPUSA: Santa Cruz SC Cavelossim defeated title contenders Salgaocar FC 6-3 in an intense GFA’s Taca Goa U-20 football cup match played at Duler Stadium, Mapusa, on Tuesday.
SCC Cavelossim shocked their opponents in the early 8th minute of play when Snedden Medeira danced his way past the Salgaocar defenders and drilled in a low shot which had no answer from the keeper.
Stunned by the early deficit, Salgaocar shifted to top gear and went on to fire three goals before the lemon break.
In the 14th minute of play Mahesh Kumar collected a long ball and seeing the keeper off his line lobbed the ball over, where Andreus John was at the right place at the right time to fire the ball home to find the equaliser for his team making it 1-1.
After some midfield action the Green Brigade got back into the scoring act, with Devendra Murgaokar netting in two goals in a span of three minutes through perfect placements to add to the frustration of the SCC Cavelossim outfit taking the tally to 3-1.
On resumption of play Salgaocar FC’s hunger for goals did not cease as within three minutes Stephen Satarkar slotted home the ball from close range making it 4-1.
Despite the huge set back SCC Cavelossim refused to surrender to their fate and managed to strike in two goals with Aaren D’Silva scoring through a header and Veegan Ferrao converting from the penalty spot to take the score tally to 3-4.
Thereon SCC Cavelossim seemed determined to turn the match around, however as luck would have it, it was Salgaocar FC who found the back of the nets yet again when Mahesh Kumar sent in a deep cross into the rival camp which was perfect headed in by substitute Lalit Tariyal, 5-3.
In the injury minutes of the match Salgaocar sealed the fate of the match in their favour when SCC Cavelossim keeper Jeet failed to hold on to Lalit Tariyal’s cross and the ball travelled to Devendra Murgaonkar who tapped it home, 6-3.
