PANJIM: Salgaocar FC will look to continue their winning ways when they take on Churchill Brothers in the round nine clash of GFA Goa Professional League, which resumes after a six-day break on October 14, at Duler Stadium, Mapusa, at 4 p.m.
The two teams last met in a high voltage encounter on the final day of the 2013-14 I-League season with the Red Machines having secured a hard fought 2-1 win on that day.
Salgaocar FC, with a near perfect record thus far, have made an unblemished start to their 2014-15 campaign accumulating an unassailable 20 points from eight outings, courtesy six wins and two draws.
Churchill Brothers on the other hand are at the fifth position with 13 points from seven outings. Salgaocar are assured a top of the table finish at the end of phase one of the league, irrespective of results from the pending matches and a win on Tuesday would make them clear favourites to regain the Goa Professional League, which they last won in 2012.
“We have started the year well and we hope to carry this form with us through the course of the season. Whilst there is always scope for improvement, I am satisfied with the overall performance of the boys,” commented Coach Derrick Pereira.
One aspect that must please the gaffer immensely is the fact that, as many as eight players have found the back of the net in as many games. In addition, most of the club’s new signings have settled in really well, some of whom have made telling contributions.
“The team is high on confidence as we prepare ourselves for the final game of the first phase and the upcoming Durand Cup,” was how Coach Derrick chose to sum up ahead of the clash.
The Greens have been drawn alongside Indian Navy and the second qualifier in Group A of the Durand Cup kicks off on 29th of this month.
