MARGAO: Salgaocar Football Club romped to a 3-1 victory over Kingfisher East Bengal, in a fifth round match of Hero I-League, at Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, here, on Saturday.
Scottish striker Darryl Duffy was drafted in the first eleven for the first time after the Federation Cup injury.
Salgaocar led 2-0 at half time through Douhou Pierre (43rd), Darryl Duffy (45th) and Brian Mascarenhas (65th).
East Bengal pulled one goal back in the 77th minute through Dudu Omagbemi.
The win, second in this league, took Salgaocar to the third place in the standings with eight points from five matches. East Bengal remained on seven points from four matches.
Salgaocar broke the deadlock in the 43rd minute when Duffy set up Pierre, who controlled the ball and shot home from close range.
Two minutes later, Duffy once again set apart East Bengal when he received a pass from the left from Gilbert Oliveira, outpaced defender Milan Susak and essayed a firm shot that found the roof of the net beating keeper Subhasish Roy Chowdhury, 2-0.
After the change of ends, East Bengal’s defence once again fumbled and conceeded another goal in the 65th minute.
Douhou Pierre who kept the attack moving stole the ball from Harmanjot Khabra and relayed the ball to Gilbert Oliveira, who ran down the flank on the right and send a perfect cross into the box for Brian Mascarenhas who beat rival keeper with a left-footer to take the match away from the visitors and also earn the man-of-the-match award.
Dudu Omagbemi finally scored his first goal in the league when he drove the ball into the net beating Subrata Paul all ends after rival defender failed to check him.
