PANJIM: Saligao United defeated hosts Vagator Parish Youth Sports Club via sudden death 7-6 to emerge champions in the finals of 15th Vagator football tournament at Ozran ground, Vagator, Sunday. The teams were level 1-1 during the regulation time.
The game started in a whirlwind fashion with the Saligao boys attacking right from the word go. And their dividends paid in the very third minute when a lapse by the Vagator goalkeeper Denny D’Souza saw M. Francis netting in the first goal.
Vagator came alive during the second half and drew level through Alvis Fernandes, who volleyed beautifully from the edge giving no chance whatsoever to Saligao goalkeeper Dietmar Fernandes.
Saligao United had the best chance to forge ahead in the 23rd minute but Jayesh Chopedekar missed a sitter after dribbling past the Vagator goalkeeper.
In the tie-breaker the teams were held to a 5-5 draw. Soma Korgaonkar, Jose Alvares, Edwin Fernandes, Jayesh Chopedekar and M Francis netted for the winners while Drynan Pereira, Abhijit Salgaonkar, Sameer Govekar, Shekhar Kerkar and Rohan Ratwal netted for the runners up.
In the sudden death, Vagator’s Alvis Fernandes shot was saved by the Saligao United goalkeeper.
Calangute MLA, Michael Lobo who was the chief guest gave away the prizes in the presence of club chairman Fr Herculano Correia and Steve D’Souza, president of the club.
