Saligao Utd escape Quitula challenge

CALANGUTE: Saligao United scored a hard-fought solitary goal victory over Quitula SC to move into the quarter-finals of 5^th Saligao United Cup All-Goa inter-village football tournament organized by Saligao United at Dr Gustavo Monteiro ground, Candolim, Saturday.

Saligao could have forged ahead in the 15^th minute but Quitula goalkeeper Anthony parried away a rasping shot from Saligao’s Trevor Dias.

Saligao broke the deadlock in the 30^th minute after Martinho Fernandes cleverly set up Trevor, who shot past the rival goalkeeper with a deft placement.

Trailing by a goal, Quitula pulled up their socks and created a couple of scoring opportunities but Merwyn Fernandes’s fierce strike hit the crossbar and Nicholas’ effort sailed inches over.

Quitula dominated the proceedings but their forwards failed to find the equalizer.
