PANJIM: Santosh Gorawar and Nagesh Naik marched into the quarter-finals of the presently ongoing Clube Tennis de Gaspar Dias Open 2017 tournament, at Gaspar Dias tennis court, Miramar, on Wednesday.
The men’s single category witnessed Santosh Gorawar convincingly defeat Manoj Pandey (4-0, 4-1) to secure his place in the championship. While Nagesh Naik overpowered Deepak (4-0, 4-1) in straight sets to make it to the quarter-finals.
Initially, Glen D’silva got the better of Max Chandra in the veteran singles category (2-4, 4-2, 4-0) but failed to sustain his spot after engaging in an intense battle with Suresh Kadam (4-2, 1-4, 4-2) where Suresh won the battle in the veteran singles category.
The fans saw Noel Noronha untroubled as he defeated M. N. Chakrawrthy (4-2, 4-0) to make it through the next round in the veteran singles category.
In the Mixed doubles category the pairing of Nagesh Naik and Simran Khan handed a (4-0, 4-1) win over Deepak Nahak and Anudnya Vernekar to cap off the morning session.
The evening session saw the commencement of the finals U-12 girls category played out. Budding players Jaya Bhatia and Simran Bundela took to the courts to play the finals amidst cheers from their fellow players and family.
Simran Bundela had the edge over Jaya Bhatia with (4-2, 4-1) respectively. Whereas Nitsa Murthy shone alongside Rutuja Prabhudessai (4-1, 4-1) to progress to the semi-finals in the women singles and U-16 girls category.
Ibtisam Sheikh engaged in a thrilling battle for win over Anushka Singhee (4-0, 4-0) in the U-16 girls category. Nehal Sheikh went down to Saiel Gajinkar (6-0) progressing to the Finals alongside Dattaraj Rama Naik in the U-12 boys category.
