PANJIM: Ten-men Sporting Clube de Goa comfortably breezed past Dempo Sports Club 2-1 in Goa Football Association’s under-18 football league match, at Duler Stadium, Mapusa, on Monday. Sporting Clube led 1-0 at the interval.
It was a thoroughly deserved victory for The Flaming Oranje as they stuck to the plan of coach Mahesh Lotlikar. Sporting Clube combined well at the back and also penetrated their opponents defence with some swift counter attack play.
Sporting Clube raced into the lead after a quarter of an hour when a superb through ball was played forward for Harshed Naik, who managed to beat the rival goalkeeper to the ball with his pace and bury it into an empty net.
After resumption, Sporting Clube continued to attack with real determination and was rewarded when Captain Akeraj Martins blasted in to double the lead.
Deep into injury time, Vineet Bugde curled a spectacular free-kick into the back of the net for Dempo to set up an exciting finale to the Panjim derby.
Sporting Clube’s Joaquim Cardoza was sent off in the closing stages for a reckless tackle.
