MAPUSA: Sporting Clube de Goa climbed to the top spot of the Goa Professional League with an impressive 4-0 win over Velsao Sports & Cultural Club, at Duler stadium, here, on Sunday.
Sporting struck two goals in each half with Philip Odogwu and Rohit Totad netting in the first session while Marcus Mascarenhas and Sachidanand Satelkar hammering two more in the second-half.
Unbeaten Sporting has 12 points from four matches while Velsao SCC languish at the bottom of the league table with just a point from six matches.
It took just eleven minutes for last year’s joint holders Sporting to open their account through a firm header from Nigerian Philip Odogwu off a corner from Myron Fernandes to give his side the lead.
Velsao SCC did have their chances in between but U-20 Rohan Rodrigues’ shot at the goal went inches over the cross bar.
Minutes later, Brian sent a short free-kick pass to well positioned Rohan whose strike hit rival defender for a corner.
At the other end, U-20 Rohit Totad was timely thwarted by Velsao keeper Presley Mascarenhas in one-to-one situation.
Finally, Rohit Totad accounted for the second goal in the 31st minute as he controlled a long pass from Marcus and finished with a neat placement to make it 2-0.
In the 45th minute, Rohit should have doubled his lead but he delayed in guiding the ball into the net after having dribbled past keeper Presley.
Four minutes into the second session and Velsao should have reduced the margin but a stinging free-kick by Brian Mascarenhas was swayed over the horizontal bar by Sporting keeper Ozen Silva.
However, Flaming Oranje netted their third goal in the 58th minute when Marcus combined with Sachidanand and scored beating the onrushing keeper Presley to make it 3-0.
Sporting’s hunger for goals did not stop as once again in the 66th minute Marcus was the provider for Sachidanand Satelkar who this time kept his cool to finish clinically to make it 4-0.
Though Velsao tried to pull a goal at the other end Sporting looked content with their four goals lead, a win and a spot at the top of the league table.
