MANDOPA: St Anthony Sports Club Assolda defeated Fr Agnel Youth Club Paroda 1-0 to move into the semi-finals of the Mandopa Cup, organised by Mandopa Sports Club at, Mandopa ground, Navelim on Thursday.
It was the match played between two close neighbours with equal footings. In the second minute, Fr Agnel YC should have netted through Sezvin Fernandes but the latter’s shot was pushed away to safety by the Fr Agnel YC keeper.
Three minutes later, St Anthony SC Assolda Mario Fernandes volley crushed into Fr Agnel YC net to open the account, which turned out to be the match-winning goal which came off Joseph Fernandes assist.
Later in the 16th minute, St Anthony SC’s Christo Fernandes’ long range shot hit the side netting.
As the match progressed Fr Agnel YC’s Manesh Oliveira power-packed shot was denied by St Anthony SC’s crossbar. Fr Agnel tried to level best but the rival defence blocked thwarted the moves.
St Anthony SC Assolda will meet the winners of Ambelim SC and Parish Youth Nuvem in the semi-final on December 16.
