PANJIM: St Khuris Boys blanked FC Bharebhatt 2-0 to clinch the first Youth of Raia Inter-ward Trophy 2016 at the Raia panchayat ground, recently.
Just five minutes into the match, St Khuris nearly took the lead when Bosco Fernandes ran down the right flank and crossed the ball into the danger zone but both his attackers Rahul Dias and Jason Barbosa lacked the quality to finish.
St Khuris Boys finally went ahead in the 30th minute, Bosco Fernandes won a free-kick and crossed the ball towards an onrushing Socky Cardozo, whose header was saved by FC Bharebhatt goalkeeper but the loose ball fell to Captain Alwin Dias, who made no mistake in heading the ball into the far corner of the net.
St Khuris Boys almost doubled their lead when Jason did well to beat his marker and cut a through ball to Bosco whose rasping shot hit the crossbar, much to the dismay of the St Khuris camp, it was St Khuris Boys who dominated most of the match with FC Bharebhatt barely getting a shot on target.
The second half did start of on a bright note for FC Bharebhatt. Their players showed a lot of content and put more men forward to try and get that equalizer.
This style of play backfired on FC Bharebhatt as a defensive gap by them led hard working Melvin Gauncar display some great composure and send a beautiful through ball to striker Jason Barbosa who did amazingly well to chip the ball over the rival keeper into the empty nets.
Jason did create a lot of goal scoring opportunities as well but the same couldn’t be converted into goals. St Khuris Boys almost increased their score line but luck wasn’t on their side as Bosco hit the crossbar and Jason Barbosa’s placement was blocked by Leo Colaco.
Ten minutes later Jason found the back of the net only to be called off for an offside. In the last minutes, St Khuris Boys tried their level best to increase their margin but the scoreline remained same to help St Khuris Boys clinch the first edition trophy.
Striker Jason was awarded Man-of-the-Match. The winners were awarded Rs 10,000 plus trophy and the runners-up were awarded Rs 7,000 plus trophy. Chief guest Luis Caitano Quadros, sarpanch, VP Raia gave away the prizes in the presence of other dignitaries.
