CALANGUTE: St Lawrence Altar Servers Boys, Agassaim emerged champions in the 6th edition of the football event in the All Goa Altar Servers sports festival organised by the Vocation Commission for the Diocesan Clergy and John Paul II Foundation for Sports (Goa) at the Seminary of Our Lady ground, Saligao.
In the final, St. Lawrence defeated Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Arambol 5-3 via tie-breaker. In the semi-finals, St. Lawrence outplayed St Francis Xavier, Velim while Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Arambol defeated St Anne’s, Ponda.
In the girls throw ball event which attracted five teams, final was a very close encounter between St Sebastians, Aquem and St. Thomas, Aldona wherein the former team defended their title with 2-1 victory.
In the semi-finals, St Thomas, Aldona beat St Lawrence, Agassaim while St Sebastians, Aquem easily overcame Our Lady of Snows, Raia.
Travis Souza of Rosary Navelim was awarded the best player (boys) award in the football tournament while Saloni Fernandes of St. Sebastians, Aquem was adjudged the best player (girls).
Archbishop Rev. Filipe Neri Ferrao was the chief guest for the finals and appreciated the efforts of the JP2F4S-Goa along with VCDC comprising of the DASA’s for promoting Christian values through sports as a medium for bringing the young children closer in relationship with God.
Later, His Grace along with Dr Rufino Monteiro, chairman, Goa Football Development Council, who was the guest of honour, gave away the trophies to the winners.
Fr. Derrick Fernandes, director VCDC welcomed while Fr. Kenbert compered and proposed a vote of thanks.
