MAPUSA: St Savio Sports Club, Calangute thrashed Nerul Sports Club 3-1 in the inaugural match of 7th Reira Trophy football organized by Saligao Sporting Club at Saligao ground, Thursday. There was no score at half time.
After a barren first half, St Savio started on an attacking note in the second session as Avdhoot Kalangutkar’s long ranger went inches wide in the 33rd minute.
Subsequently, two minutes later, Francisco Fernandes’ pass to Domnic Fernandes in the danger zone was cut short by Nerul defender Rahul Kandolkar with a timely tackle.
In the 40th minute, St Savio broke the deadlock, thanks to a defensive lapse by Nerul’s Joulious D’Costa that allowed Colin Sieiro to sneak in and pass to the unmarked Domnic who tapped in from close range.
Two minutes later, St Savio went on to double their lead as Francisco’s shot was blocked by Xavier but it rebounded back to Francisco, who beat the rival goalkeeper and unselfishly passed to teammate Agnelo Fernandes for an easy tap in.
It the 46th minute, St Savio netted their third goal through Alex Fernandes’s neat placement.
However, Nerul pulled one back in the dying minutes through a Deu Sangelkar strike.
