MARGAO: The stage is set and the draw for the All India Volleyball Tournament for the Cuncolim Union Trophy , which is set to kick-off on April 30, was released today after a specially convened meeting of Cuncolim Union.
The finals are slated for May 4. All matches begin at 7.30 p.m.
The Curtain raiser for the event will be a clash between host Cuncolim Union Goa selection and Income Tax dept, Pune. It is followed by the match between Haryana SIDC and RCF Mumbai.
Five out station teams – with a host of Indian players donning their team colours –are set to enthrall volleyball followers in the State. Goa will be represented by hosts Cuncolim Union. The outstation teams that have already confirmed participation are ONGC Dehradun; Bharat Petroleum Kerala, Haryana State IDC, RCF Mumbai and Income Tax Pune which are waiting to covet this prestigious title .
“We want to promote Volleyball to help rebuild a dying legacy”, says Elvis Gomes , President of Cuncolim Union who is anchoring the activities at Cuncolim Union. And Elvis is not alone in this.
“Cuncolim Union are known to conduct excellent all Goa volleyball tournaments. They have decided to move forward now. With Elvis Gomes as the president this tournament will be a big boost for volleyball in Goa .I am looking forward to some great volleyball in the days to come”, stated Irvin Soares, President of the Goa Volleyball Association (GVA).
John Cruz from the Customs was a volleyball player who mesmerized during his playing days. Apart from playing for Customs and Goa Police, John represented Goa a number of times.” It is nice to know that teams with players who represent India are taking part in this tournament. Volleyball has been dying in Goa. We needed such tournaments in the villages.
Volleyball stems from the villages. It is nice Cuncolim Union has decided to move in the right direction. Volleyball fans will enjoy” proclaims John, emphatically.
Whatever the outcome, Cuncolim Union have already set the ball in motion. The best is yet to come for volleyball in Goa.
