PANJIM: On Friday night two of the semi-finalists booked their spots. On Saturday, four teams will battle to grab the final two spots in the semi-finals.
Nigeria shocked the USA via a penalty shoot-out. Later, Germany beat Brazil 2-0. Today Asia’s representatives Japan will take on Spain but first Colombia will play Tanzania.
Tanzania, the “Serengeti Girls”, making their debut at a global tournament, bounced back from an opening 0-4 loss to Japan to beat former champions France 2-1 before making the quarters with a 1-1 draw with Canada.
Their feat here could boost women’s football in Tanzania. Coach Bakari Shime said the spot in the quarterfinals could be a turning point.
He was quoted as saying, “The federation and the government are pushing women’s football because they have seen that the women’s teams can do better than the men.”
Colombia has Linda Caicedo the top markswoman in the tournament with three goals. Coach Carlos Paniagua will hope Linda adds to that tally.
Playing later, Japan face Spain. The Japanese have been disciplined, shown flair and scored goals influenced by Miharu Shinjo who won two straight player of the match awards.
Coach Kano Michihisa will hope the coordinated destruction of the opponent continues against holders Spain who are a well-rounded team with scoring potential across the team.
